FAMOUS ROMANS FABIUS, QUINTUS MAXIMUS VERRUCOSUS Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus (called Cunctator, the delayer) was a statesman and military leader. He was elected Consul five times and was appointed Dictator twice. He earned the honorific, Cunctator, the delayer, because of his military policy of not engaging Hannibal in a major land battle, choosing instead to shadow him, picking off small bodies of Carthaginian troops whenever the opportunity arose. 280-203 BC READ MORE List of Famous Romans Fabius, …thought it not seasonable to engage with the enemy; …but in regard that the Carthaginians were but few, and in want of money and supplies, he deemed it best not to meet in the field a general whose army had been tried in many encounters, and whose object was a battle, but to send aid to their allies, control the movements of the various subject cities, and let the force and vigor of Hannibal waste away and expire, like a flame, for want of aliment. Plutarch: Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans (Kindle Location 4534). Kindle Edition. Fabius
